CO poisoning, 3 people in a family in coma in Nghe An – Aug 8, 2024

     

 

WHAT 3 people in a family were in a coma due to using a generator to run the air conditioner in a closed bedroom.

WHY – HOW
After a night of using a generator which placed in the room connected to bedroom, 15-20m2, but the space was closed, to turn on the air conditioner in the bedroom.
The next morning, 3 people in the family, including the couple and their 15-year-old son, were found in a coma, with vomit next to them, and were taken to the emergency hospital.
The father suffered from mild poisoning, was treated locally and discharged, while the mother and son were intubated and taken to the Poison Control Center, Bach Mai Hospital.
Currently, the wife has regained consciousness and is off the ventilator, while the son is still in a critical coma.
DAMAGE Patients with health damage may have sequelae later on.

  • Do not use equipment or machinery such as generators that creating CO gas in enclosed spaces.
  • Install CO concentration monitoring and alarm devices in areas where CO gas creating machinery or equipment is used, such as gas kitchen areas.
  • Do not burn coal for heating in enclosed spaces
